Lincoln Alexander's legacy carried forward TORONTO - Everyone knew him as “Linc,” and Tuesday would have been his92nd birthday. who died in 2012, was the province’s first black lieutenant governor, fnirst black MP, and first black cabinet minister. When studying law as the only black student in his class he stood and openly questione the law school dean for using a racial slur during a speech.
That’s a remarkable achievement for a guy who was the son of a hotel maid and a railway porter. Tuesday’s ceremony marked the first celebration of the day named in his honour. The celebration was two-fold. It was also a day to hand out Lincoln Alexander Awards to young people who’ve lived up to Linc’s ideals. The awards have been happening since 1993.
